From the Pastor ’s Pen
It is February and January has flown by with many exciting events like the snowstorm of 2026. February is also the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14th. So, if you haven’t already bought a card and a gift for a loved one, now is the time to do it!
I am sitting in my office reflecting on where I have been over the past two weeks. With the permission of our church leadership, I was in Pittsburgh, PA taking a couple of classes on Biblical Studies and Homiletics (the art of preparing and delivering sermons). Classes were held on the campus of Pittsburgh Theological Seminary.
While in Pittsburgh we had the snowstorm of 2026 and for three days were snowed in having in-person classes canceled. But, thanks to the Internet, we were able to continue classes on Zoom. Calvary Baptist Church also cancelled our in-person service on Jan. 25 due to the snowstorm, but was able to continue unabated with our Zoom Service thanks to the help of Mukesh Singh and others who put together that service! And I was able to attend our service even while out in Pittsburgh by just logging on to Zoom! Special thanks to Pastor Nancy who gave a wonderful sermon, to Terri King and others who participate in that weekly service at 9am each Sunday.
As I look out my office window I see the beautiful snow, which is a sign of God’s activity in our world. Snow comes and covers the earth in the winter, and by spring, melts away, having watered the earth. On Feb. 18th, we begin a period in the Church Calendar known as Lent. Lent is a time of preparation and contemplation for the last events of Jesus’ life before his glorious resurrection.
To quote a line from the band ‘We the Kingdom’ in their song ‘Miracle Power’,
“I may not know what a day may bring, but I know who brings the day.”
We will encounter difficulties in our own lives, such as snowstorms, but we also know that Jesus will be there to help see us through. Here is a link to ‘We the Kingdom’s’ song ‘Miracle Power’: https://share.google/1GmHV5CNycbgDNueG
During the month of February, we also celebrate Black History Month. I continue to think about people like Martin Luther King Jr. who gave his life for the cause of improving life for people of color. May we as a church stand against acts of oppression. Looking forward to seeing you at church and or at some of our Lenten events.
Sincerely in Christ,
Pastor Dwayne
